Tips on How to Get a Job in Marketing

By Erich Lagasse

It's all about promotion
A bachelor's degree in communications or business administration is the first step to get a job in marketing. After graduation focus on what you know, i.e. how businesses attract consumers to buy their products or use their services. Apply this to your job search. Promote the added value of your time with experiences, skills and talents that will help achieve a business' objectives. Some sources, e.g. wiki sites, on the internet can provide valuable tips and information to enhance your job hunt.
1st Objective: Develop criteria
In college get internships, volunteer or work during the summer; it will be difficult to get a good job without any work experience. Businesses need employees who can make the right decision unsupervised. Criterion is not developed by following rules, but by learning from the right people and one's mistakes. Look for challenges that will expose you to different types of problems and situations, and try to learn from every experience. Be objective.
2nd Objective: Express yourself
It's imperative for marketing professionals to communicate well with their managers, team members and clients. There are plenty of handbooks that provide guidance on how to speak and write correctly. Colleges offer writing courses that not only will improve your composition skills but also will inspire you to be more thoughtful of how you speak.
3rd Objective: Build a professional network
Visualize where you want to be in five years and talk to people who are already there. The internet is a great way to contact professionals who can teach you about their job and lead you in the right direction. They also can introduce you to colleagues who specialize in different areas. Become a member of associations and organizations where you can meet other marketing professionals.
4th Objective: Be professional
Think of your resume as your personal ad. Promote your skills, talents and experience with a detailed and factual resume that reflects your criteria. Avoid misleading information and ambiguous experiences; write solid accomplishments you can prove. Hiring managers are usually swamped with resumes and prefer to ask coworkers for referrals. Give your resume to members of your professional network.
5th Objective: Define your target
Work will not only teach you ethics but also what you are good at. Once you have an idea of what you love to do AND do well, get an entry level position in one of your favorite companies. Don't worry if the job is not marketing related; however, be sure the company has a department you want to work in, e.g. sales, advertising, promotion, etc.
6th Objective: Assume responsibility
Successful professionals make decisions that will help the organization they work for reach their goals. After you learn to make objective decisions, assume higher levels of responsibility. Being able to work under pressure is a skill sought by most employers. Make thoughtful decisions, i.e. picture the consequence of each alternative and pick the one that best fits the company's goals.
7th Objective: Continue your education
Marketing is a highly competitive field; therefore it's essential to keep up with the new techniques and trends. Attending seminars and conferences will help you understand new ideas as well as expand your professional network. Some associations certify that professionals comply with certain aspects of the marketing field, thereby reassuring hiring managers that candidates are qualified for specific jobs. A master of business administration in marketing is also a great way to prepare for a management position.
A world of opportunities
A savvied marketing professional's network and tenure can be a great asset. Experts are more frequently promoted to top management positions than pros from other fields. Furthermore, the experience obtained working in different businesses can serve as perfect foundation for professionals to open their own business. Though a job in marketing is demanding, objective-driven professionals may benefit from many rewards once they prove their ability to overcome adversity and challenge.

Quick ways to improve your resume

By content.mycareer.com

There's no doubt that jobseekers are creating better resumes than ever before. But, while most of us are au fait with resume etiquette, there are still one or two bad habits that can creep into our style and content from the get-go.

“The number one way to improve your resume is to tailor it to the job you’re applying for,” says Steve Walton, chief psychologist at Hallis Recruitment. “It's a simple improvement, but accentuating relevant skills or experiences communicates a high level of interest and encourages a positive perception.”
Indeed, when it comes to resumes, the old adage that it takes less than 30 seconds to make an impression rings true. Many jobseekers unwittingly sabotage their chances of success by failing to recognise that their resume is their best tool for selling their talents.

But this doesn't mean you have to spend hours on a total overhaul to make a difference. By following our quick and easy tips, you can improve the marketability of your resume within a matter of minutes.
Rewrite it
Rewrite your resume using a tone that’s enthusiastic, upbeat and professional. As a general rule, it’s better to be too professional than too casual; and clear, concise wording works best.

“You want to adjust the tone of your resume for the industry and environment you’re interviewing for,” says Walton. “For instance, a formal tone will win you points if you’re applying for a job at a law firm, but could work against you if you’re applying for a job at an ad agency.”
Banish bashfulness
If you want to get a bit more creative with your rewrite, then use action verbs and strong adjectives to accentuate your skills or work history. High impact words and phrases can give your credentials a boost and strengthen your achievements.

“Whether we like it or not, applying for jobs is a competition. And when it comes to resumes, whether or not you speak highly of yourself effects how an employer perceives your potential against other candidates,” says Walton.
Embrace convention
If you want to take revising your resume a step further, brevity will open doors, and clear formatting is a must. But bear in mind that coloured paper, ‘creative’ fonts or clip art will distract the interviewer from your talents, and may even trigger an outright rejection.

“Employers may have to sift through a large number of job applications in a short space of time, so in order to get noticed you need to make sure that you pay attention to correct resume format and business etiquette,” says Walton. For this, he recommends applying a standard structure (e.g. chronological, functional, or combination), using no more than two conventional fonts, using consistent alignment techniques, and leaving at least two lines between each section.
Use a fine tooth comb
If all that sounds a little too complicated for your liking, a simpler option is to double-check your grammar and spelling, which Walton recommends for establishing a minimal rapport with the employer. Keeping sentences short and simple, organising paragraphs, and using short, direct sub-headings can also work wonders.
Cut through the clutterFinally, don’t forget that keeping it simple is a key component of resume success – so set a two-page limit and stick to it.

“Long-winded resumes only increase the chances of your talents being overlooked,” says Walton. “Ultimately it’s presenting your skills and abilities clearly, confidently and succinctly that will increase the chances of your resume being read,” says Walton.

Finding Freelance Jobs Online

By Jennifer Polk

Finding Freelance Work Online
Freelance jobs is when a person sells services to employers without a long-term commitment. You would be under an independent contract. Normally being a freelance worker means that you would be working off the books. When you work off the books, you get paid "In hand" or in this case through pay pal or check in mail, depending on your own personally situation and the terms of that job.
a lot of people would prefer this option in case they are currently receiving unemployment benefits and would like to get extra money on top of that. Or for some reason you may not have a social security number which means you cant work in the united states. As a result Freelance "off the books" work would be better for you.
THE PROS
Off the books work (Tax man don't have to know)
You get your full pay all at once. With Freelance jobs the minute your done with the assignment you get paid immediately. The best part about this is, how fast you get paid is up to you. If you have to write an article for a blog and it pays you $50 to complete it in 1 week. For most of us we can write an article in about 2 hours instead of 1 week. So the moment your done, you get paid.
THE CONS
Not steady work - since this is freelance work you get paid once you complete the job. And when your job is done, then that's it. You either have to find another freelance job on your own or maybe the person you were working with will refer you to someone else. Better yet that same person can have another job already lined up for you. So its very important to make a good impression, get the job done on time or early and make sure you do good work.

If your the type of person that has programming skills, great writing skills, blog designers, website designers, research shoppers, travel writing, business writing and much more. There are lots of great freelance jobs online that will help you earn extra money or maybe start a new career. The hard part is trying to find the best one for your talents and finding a replicable job board for people that are looking.
Some great sources to find freelance jobs would be to search it on large search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. But what a lot of people don't know is that you can find pretty good jobs in Craiglist as well. Craigslist is a very large classified ad website. They pretty much have everything available. Jobs, services and you can buy things etc. The best way to search for freelance work on Craigslist would be to visit the site and on the left hand side there's a search bar. All you have to do is type in freelance, or freelance jobs and maybe the state you live in and everything will come up for you. However while searching on this website please be careful. There are lots of "Jobs" out there that aren't really jobs at all. They just want you to submit the information, like on a resume for example and from there they use your information for what they really want. As a result you never hear from them again.
Just be mindful that not everyone on Craigslist is there to get you a job. A good amount of them are there to help themselves. Regardless that is still a wonderful source to find some freelance work online. Another good place to find freelance work would be on Job Boards. Now Job Boards is pretty much a fancy way of saying the "Help Wanted Ad" but for the internet. A job board is a place you go to online that has employers looking for employees on a contract basis (Freelance). Only freelance jobs are listed on the job board therefore you don't have to go through the extra hassle of filtering out freelance work from a regular job. As a result you can find your potential work much quicker and make your searching more effective.

31 Ways to Improve Your Career Today

By Jeffrey Strain

While I currently work for myself, there was a time when I actually worked for a large corporation.
My time there taught me that corporate life wasn’t the career path that I ultimately wanted to walk down, but that didn’t stop me from learning a lot of solid advice from the mentors I met there that continues to be helpful to me to this day.

When it comes to your career, it is usually small things over a long period of time that add up to the success that you achieve. Getting into the habit of making small improvements on a daily basis will reap huge rewards in the long run. If you find yourself with nothing to do, whether at work or at home, here are 31 actions you can take to help improve your career.

Who Do You Respect?
If you do nothing else on this list the first time you find yourself with some free time, find yourself a mentor. Pick someone (or preferably several people) that you respect and ask them to mentor you. Most people will be more than happy to pass along advice that they have learned over the years which can be invaluable in helping your career. They will also be great people to use as a sounding board with ideas you have and help you figure out the best way to obtain the goals you are seeking to accomplish. A mentor can help you in many other ways during your career including making your advancement much easier. Finding a mentor is actually sound advice for all aspects of your life including finding a financial mentor.

Support The Support
Learn who the support staff are and go out of your way to be helpful to them. They do a lot of the grunt work and don’t get nearly the amount of appreciation that they deserve, so they notice when someone treats them well. When an emergency happens (and they always do) having the support staff on your side can be the difference between failure and pulling out success. From clerks and secretaries to cleaning staff, treat them well and you’ll never regret doing so when crunch time comes.

Get Them To Come To You

This is a little trick that I learned that produced great result for little effort and just a bit of money. Create a candy jar for your co-workers. Don’t get the cheap candy. Get the good stuff that you know everyone loves. It took me some time to perfect my method of deploying the candy jar and you may have to experiment to get your deployment right. I put it out only when I had free time to chat, otherwise I would be interrupted too often. I also learned to lock it away when I went home or it would be empty when I arrived the next morning. What it did do was keep me up to date on all the happenings in the office. When people stop by to grab some candy, they will tell you things that are going on that you may otherwise miss. I found that keeping abreast of this information helped me to better understand the dynamics that were taking place which helped with my career.

Don’t Do It Later
Procrastinating has always been a major problem for me and something that I still work on today. If you can identify how you’re procrastinating and create a system to discourage yourself from doing so, you will dramatically increase your productivity. My big vice was watching TV far too much and I’ve had to ween myself from spending too much time on social networking sites as well. Once I find one place where I procrastinate, I’ve learned that I will eventually replace it with another, so it’s a continual process. I have a whole list of things I have done to improve my productivity. Once you have identified places that you are spending too much time, take steps to reduce the amount of time you spend on them and instead use that time to further your career.

Timing Is Everything
It may not seem like a big deal to be on time when all meetings start 15 minutes late, but it is if you are the person that is causing the meeting to start late. One boss I had would actually lock the door of the meeting room once the meeting began. If you were late, you were out of luck. While this is a great way to quickly learn to be on time, it’s not a method that most people are subjected to and they may not realize that being a few minutes late can get them a bad reputation.

Being on time actually means arriving to meetings a few minutes early. Co-workers that are running the meeting will appreciate your promptness and you will get a reputation of being reliable. The same goes for work that needs to be handed in to your boss. Learn to hand it in before it’s due — this will show your organizational skills and get the reputation of being highly responsible. If you find that you are always a bit late or rushed to get things done, use your free time to get ahead instead of waiting until the last second.

Pinpoint The Essentials
One of the biggest myths in business is that those who work the hardest are the ones that get ahead the most. Working hard is important, but working smart is just as important. Working smart means pinpointing the areas within your job that are essential to your group and to the company. Once these have been identified, focus most of your resources in those areas. This is one of the best pieces of advice I ever received from my mentors. Take some time to look at your job and understand what parts of it are the most essential to others both inside and outside your work group. If you can pinpoint those important areas, you become the person that people come to when things need to get done.

Become A Listmaster
I used to think that making lists was useless, until I started making them myself in a way that was useful for me. I actually have two lists – one is a list of all the things I want to do and one is my daily must-do list. On the daily must-do list, I only place the three most important things I have to do that day and I will work on those three things until they’re done. Once finished, I can go to my general list and choose projects from there. If I don’t finish, then I keep working on that list of three the next day and until it’s done. This ensures that I get done the things that I may not like to do as much so that they don’t constantly get delegated to the end of the longer list. How you develop your own list may be very different, but creating a system will help you to accomplish more at work in less time. Once you complete something, don’t throw the list away. Instead, date and file them in a work completed folder. This will allow you to have a documented list of all the tasks you’ve accomplished which you can take out at your next performance review or when asking for a raise.

Who’s The Boss
I’ve had both bosses I liked, and ones that I could have certainly lived without. Even the ones that I didn’t particularly like, I found that talking with them and discussing their expectations was always a better career move than trying to avoid them. For the bosses I did like, it was a great way to get their support for the career advancements I wanted to make. No matter what the relationship, being able to talk with your boss about work expectations will almost always help your career much more than not talking. If you haven’t talked with your boss lately, set up a time to do so and spend some time writing down the topics you would like to discuss.

Second & Thirds Can Be Good
Even though I was the worst student ever when it came to foreign languages in school, I’m living proof that absolutely anyone can learn a second language. I have no doubt that all of my high school language teachers would roll over in their graves if they knew I was proficient in Japanese. Being proficient in a second language can open up a lot of career opportunities and is well worth pursuing if you have an interest in one. There are plenty of resources online including those developed by the Foreign Service Institute to help you along. Learning a foreign language can give you a huge leg up if you have thoughts of working for your company in a foreign country.

Class Act
There are far too many people who believe that education ends as soon as they walk across the stage and receive their college diploma. In fact, education is a never ending pursuit even if you aren’t taking formal classes. There are a large number of classes that you can take, or skills that you can obtain, that will make it easier for you to advance in your career. Even if you are not sure, take classes that you have always wanted to try. You’d be surprised at how knowledge that doesn’t seem relevant to your career can end up being useful down the road. It’s definitely worthwhile talking with your personnel department to see if they will help pay for you to obtain these skills. Many will. Best of all, it’s easier than ever to take classes while working full time with online education.

Redo Your History
It’s always wise to have an updated resume on hand just in case. If you haven’t done so in awhile, take some time to look over your resume to update it and improve it. Make sure that you have a few copies in your briefcase so that they are always ready to hand out. Having a resume ready is a great way to make a quality first impression and instantly shows your organizational skills to anyone that may be interested in hiring you.

Get Linked
It used to take a lot of effort to network. While you still need to spend time and effort doing so, Web 2.0 has made it a lot easier to make new contacts with people that have similar background and career interests. If you haven’t signed up yet, consider joining Linkedin (and feel free to add me if you get the urge) which can greatly expand your networking resources. If you have already joined, take some time to explore and find some other people you may want to contact.

Email Love
One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years that will help you in any career you choose is to stay in contact with people that you meet. This can be an easy way to improve your career, keep network lines open and create new network contacts. There are probably more than a few professional contacts that you have made that you haven’t touched base with in awhile. There are probably a number of people that you have never met, but that you would like to make contact with. Spend a few minutes sending out emails to some of these people to reestablish contact or create a new contact.

Call To Arms
For the exact same reason that you should send out some emails, you should also make a few phone calls to catch up with peers and others. Calling is a more direct approach that will make sure that your message doesn’t get lost in all the other emails the recipient receives. It’s surprising how many times a contact phone call can lead to a new career opportunity that would have never developed had you chosen not to make the call.

Business Dating
An easy and effective tool which I often used when I was working for a large company was the lunch break. When I first arrived, I found myself in a new city and at a new company where I knew nobody. Inviting people to talk over lunch conveniently solved the problem of me not liking to eat alone. Later I continued to make lunch dates because of all the advantages that came from it. Lunch dates give you an opportunity to talk with people about ideas you have in a more informal setting than in the office. Making a lunch date is also a excellent way to network and catch up with peers and mentors, or to meet someone new you’ve wanted to talk to. If everyone seems to be too busy with their work schedule, lunch (and even breakfast) is an excellent time to set up a get together.

Make Things Eventful
Take some time to research what meetings, presentations, talks or events are taking place in your field of expertise and sign-up to attend. Not only will you likely gather some good information that will be useful in your job, these are excellent places to meet new contacts and expand your contact network.

Don’t Be Afraid To Associate
If your career has an association, go beyond joining it and make an effort to be a regular participant in it. Most local chapters are always looking for people willing to lend a helping hand and doing so can easily put you in the position to meet those higher up in the organization. Again, this will expand and open you up to a wide variety of new contacts. It will also help you keep up with the newest developments in your chosen career, which has many advantages.

Show Some Appreciation
It’s amazing what a sincere, hand written “thank you” note can do for the amount of time it takes to create. With email and the paperless office concept, hand written thank you notes stand out these days and definitely leave a positive impression on the recipient. Furthermore, when you give thank you notes, the recipients know that the time they spend helping you was appreciated and therefore will likely be more than willing to help out in the future. If someone has recently helped you out in any way, take a moment to thank them. This is one thing that is hard to do too much of, so if you have any doubt, always choose to send the note of appreciation.

Reread The Writing On The Wall
This one is a big one for me. I rely on my spell checker far too often when it comes to writing. Sure, it will find misspelled words, but it won’t find those that are spelled correctly that are incorrect or sentences that contain poor grammar. I had a terrible habit of not rereading my writing before showing it to others, but I learned to after a number of embarrassing mistakes that should have never happened. Assuming that your writing is fine if it passes a spell check is a bad assumption to make. Get into the habit of rereading everything that you write whether it be an email, a report or any other work related document, especially after a spell check. You will avoid a lot of amateurish writing mistakes and look a lot more professional in all your work.

The Write Stuff
Along the same lines as rereading your documents, it’s well worthwhile to constantly work on improving your writing skills. Being able to put together reports, letters, proposals and other written information which draws attention to the important points among all the information presented is a great skill to have and will get noticed. Take some time to go over basic writing techniques when you have some free time.

Get Carded
Spend some time thinking about the impression you want your business cards to make and see if there are some changes that you can make to the ones you have to achieve what you want. I’m always looking for new business cards that are creative and will leave a lasting impression on anyone who receives them. Take a bit of time doing this and it may lead to an opportunity that would have never appeared if your business card was lost in the pile with everyone else’s.

Impress From The Start
One of the many reasons I decided the corporate world was not for me was because I hated dressing in a suit everyday to make a good first impression. That being said, there is no doubt that first impressions count. Dressing appropriately and having good hygiene and manners is important. It’s often the little things that will set you apart from the average person. Learn to make eye contact when speaking to people, smile, and know how to introduce yourself confidently. Always arrive to business meetings or appointments on time (or even better, a little ahead of time). Take a few moments to make sure that you are making a good first impression with everyone you meet.

Speak Out Loud
One of the things I used to fear most was to do public speaking. Over the years, I have learned to relax and don’t get quite as nervous, but when I first started teaching, even going in front of a classroom of high school students would have my stomach churning the entire morning before classes began. Being able to make a quality presentation is an important way to get noticed and improve your career prospects. Listen to the way that your favorite speakers deliver their information and make the effort to adopt that style into your own speaking. Join your local Toastmasters group to help you improve these skills.

Know The News
One of my mentors told me that I should read something about current events everyday before coming into work and it’s a habit I’ve kept to this day. I try to read at least an hour a day on a wide variety of topics. Some of the reading is related to my chosen career and issues that pertain to it so that I keep up on the latest news and trends, but I also read a lot of information that is outside my career. Reading helps to spark new ideas, it will challenge your thinking process and expand your knowledge base – all things that can be helpful in your career advancement.

Switch To A Higher Gear
I am one of the slowest readers in the world and struggled in college with all the reading that needed to be done. Being able to consume a lot of information is a skill that will always be a positive for any career, so learning to read and comprehend at a quick rate is a skill worth pursuing. There are a lot of speed reading tutorials on the Internet. I have been using Spreeder for my daily reading that has allowed me to get through a lot more information than I previously was able to do. Whatever method you choose, learning to read faster will ultimately help your career.

Clean Sweep
If your work area looks anything like mine, it needs a good cleaning at least once a week or it will quickly get out of control. I actually mark down on my calendar to clean my desk area every Friday afternoon, and it’s amazing what 15 minutes a week will do to keep your desk organized. Depending on the current shape of your office, it may take a bit more time to get to the point where all you need is 15 minutes to clean everything up. Start today putting aside 10 minutes a day to clean your desk until you have your work area in the condition you want, then you can move to maintenance mode. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much time you save looking for things, and an orderly office leaves a positive impression on co-workers and bosses.

Score Some Goals
This is one of those things that seems obvious, but I think a lot of people don’t spend the amount of time or effort on them that they should. I know I didn’t for the longest time. I thought I could get away with general career goals that I had in my head, but soon realized the power that comes with taking the time to write them down. What really helped me was to give myself a time limit to achieve these goals. While you may not always reach them, writing down specific career goals you want to achieve will get you a lot closer to them than not doing so. Consider setting them for various time periods: 3 months, 1 year , 5 years, etc. and then begin working toward them.

Establish Your Identity
Since I make my living this way, it would make no sense for me to leave it out. Creating a blog or website about your chosen career can be a great way to meet new people and share ideas. It can also be an excellent way to begin that part-time business that may eventually end up being your full time job, which is exactly what happened in my case. I have personally found that creating content helps to crystallize the things that are truly important to me. This, in turn, helps me realize what goals are most most important for me to achieve. Starting any type of blog or journal can help you to do the same. Just be sure that doing so will not get you in trouble with your company.

Give Yourself A Break
Taking breaks is something which took me a long time to realize really does work. It’s not the time you spend doing your work as much as how focused you are when you are working. Taking breaks, stretching and taking short walks can all dramatically improve your energy level so that you work better. Take some time to think about the signals. Mine happen to be going to my email (instead of finishing what I should be doing), closing my eyes to try and refresh them and my shoulders getting sore. Spend some time learning your personal signals that you aren’t performing at your peak. Know when to take a break and you’ll find that your productivity will dramatically increase.

Part-Time It
I’m a firm believer that if you want to have the perfect job, you’re going to have to go out and create it yourself. While I have had many jobs over the years that I have truly enjoyed, it wasn’t until I started building my own sites and blogs that I realized what true passion for something was. Begin part-time and build slowly when you have some free time, but start the process today. Five years from now you will be so thankful that you did and you might even find that it ends up being your full time work.

Fall In Love
Learn to love what you’re doing, or begin looking for something else. Life is far to short to do something that you don’t truly enjoy. There are times when you may have to take a job that you don’t particularly like, but there is no reason that you have to be stuck there. If you don’t thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing, start implementing steps to get a job that you do love. There is nothing better than to get up every morning knowing that even if you weren’t getting payed a dollar to do so, you would still be doing the same thing that you are doing. It’s also much harder not to improve your career opportunities when you love what you do because the energy and enthusiasm you have for what you do tends to be infectious and draw people to you. If for some reason you don’t know what you love, start experimenting. That’s the only way to find out.
There are always plenty of things that you can begin doing that will improve your career as the above list shows. Pick a couple that you know you need to work most upon and keep at it. The more that you try to improve yourself, the more opportunities that will present themselves.

Job Search Techniques - Maximize Your Chances of Bagging the Job

By Philip Gregory Andrews

No one wants to go around the town with their rolling briefcases or school messenger bag on their shoulders while in search for the right job because they had been rejected by different companies already.
Job haunting can really be a tedious not to mention frustrating feat to accomplish. Printing the resume as well as the picture to go with it is expensive. Every tick of the clock means that your time is ticking away only to find out that you didn't make it to the final cut. Some, because of the number of rejections they have accepted, don't even want to apply anymore.
But there are different available techniques that can save your face from those embarrassing situations you have to face when the manager tells you that you are not qualified. All you have to actually do is to master the job search techniques so your employer will spot you from the cloud and no one will have the guts to throw you out of nowhere.
1. Resume and cover letter. This is a person's first step in catching his future employer's attention. A good resume followed with a good academic standing is a way on turning your score to your boss from zero to hero. It will serve as your first Ace in the game. A good and well constructed resume can earn a positive response. Pictures may not appear that important but accept the fact that it can change a lot of things. When including a photo of yourself in your resume, choose the one that looks dignified or formal.
2. Dress Up Accordingly. Although applications can be done online nowadays, some companies still prefer if the applicant will pass it personally because of some reasons. If you will pass your application letter on a company personally, make sure that you wear appropriate clothes. Maybe dressing up on business attire may not be necessary, at least casual clothes are appropriate. Do not bring along with you your rolling briefcases or school messenger bag for they might be a little inappropriate.
3. Apply only if you're qualified. To increase your chances of being accepted for a position, pass your resume only if you know that you are qualified or you have met all of the required skills. Passing resumes to any position for pure luck is not a very good idea since the hiring body will still skip your application letter.
4. Nail down the interview. There are some companies that conduct interviews even without confirming that you are qualified for the job. First impressions make quite an impact especially to the employer. So you should be able to appear like the person they are actually looking for although the other applicants are highly qualified than you are. Answer the questions wittingly and never show doubt to your statements. Also, appear approachable but not too friendly to give the impression that you are a serious worker.
Job search techniques are not a lesson one should memorize. It is mastered through frequent circumstances when one looks for a job. The more one is exposed to job searches, the more he becomes an expert.

Ten tips for getting started:

1.   Focus on achievement—not money
Drucker drew an important distinction between achievement and money. He suggested focusing on achievement and paying attention to how your successes, on and off the job, benefit both you and others. That doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t make money, Drucker explained, but that the pursuit of money ought to play a subordinate role.

2.   Make time for thinking
Thinking is hard work, and in our fast-paced society, said Drucker, it is sorely devalued. The point, he urged, is to break from the daily grind and think about where you are and where you’re going. You might not have the desire or means for Drucker’s suggested “week in the wilderness,” but surely you can carve out an hour now and then for self-reflection. Take a walk, practice yoga or meditation, or sit in nature. At work, even preparing for a performance review offers an opportunity to stop and reflect.

3.   Practice “systematic abandonment”
“People are effective because they say no…because they say this isn’t for me,” declared Drucker. Practice what he called “systematic abandonment”—stepping back, at regular intervals, to determine which of your present activities can be scaled back or eliminated. Only then can you make way for something more fruitful, such as teaching, learning, or volunteering.

4.   Learn the art of leisure
Drucker observed that “loafing” is easy, but “leisure” is difficult. As important as work is, avoid allowing it to be your only source of fulfillment. Find an outside interest or two, focusing on things that may bring you pleasure, satisfaction, and a heightened sense of self-worth.

5.   Develop a parallel career
In Drucker’s estimation, a parallel career can give you a window into other worlds and provide leadership opportunities that may not be available in your primary job. Even if your work is going perfectly, that won’t always be the case. So, start thinking now about a parallel career such as teaching, writing, or working in the nonprofit world. One day, it may even morph into your second or post-retirement career.

6.   Volunteer your time and talent
Drucker saw volunteerism as essential to the smooth functioning of society, as well as a satisfying way of ensuring that work doesn’t consume your life. Today, there are hundreds of volunteering opportunities to choose from. Drucker’s recommendation was simple: Find an organization and cause you believe in—and get to work!

7.   Become a mentor
Mentorship may be broader than just showing someone the ropes in a group or organization. It can include wide-ranging career and life advice, and as Drucker said, provide big benefits not only to the “mentee,” but also to the mentor. If you’ve been guided by mentors of your own, pay it forward by mentoring others. If not, look for opportunities to both mentor and be mentored.

8.   Start teaching
Another Drucker maxim: No one learns as much as the person who must teach his subject. Whether you become a volunteer, an adjunct professor, or a guest lecturer or presenter, you can find gratification in teaching others. Consider the kinds of opportunities that may be open to you at work, schools, churches, and professional associations. Also, if you know people who teach, ask for their advice and insights.

9.   Learn how to learn
For Drucker, learning was built into the fabric of his being. He also felt strongly that learning how to learn is key to self-development. Some people, he said, are readers, while others like to talk and listen, whether in casual conversation or more formal instruction. When it’s really crucial to learn something, think about how you learn best and seek out those types of opportunities.

10.   Be the CEO of your own life
Drucker saw self-management as an ongoing discipline, requiring self-knowledge, introspection, and personal responsibility. “In effect,” he said, “managing oneself demands that each knowledge worker think and behave like a chief executive officer.” Start now to think of yourself as the CEO of your own life and career, and take accountability for your decisions and actions. Know who you are, what is important to you, and how you will contribute at work and in the world.

Finally, take a deep breath and don’t expect everything to happen at once. Start where you are and move towards your total life one step at a time.

25 Ways to Improve Your Career Today

By financialhack.com

I actually worked for a large corporation in long ago days. While the time there taught me that corporate life wasn’t the career that I ultimately wanted for myself, I also learned a lot from my mentors on ways to get ahead, much of which is good advice no matter what career choice you choose to take.

When it comes to your career, it is usually small things over a long period of time that add up to the success that you achieve. Getting into the habit of making small improvements on a daily basis will reap huge rewards over the long run. If you find yourself at your desk with some free time, here are 25 things you can do to help improve your career.

Find A Mentor: If you do nothing else on this list today, do this. Find someone (or several people) that you respect and ask them to mentor you. Most people will be more than happy to pass along advice that they have learned over the years which can be invaluable in helping your career. They will also be great people to use as a sounding board with ideas you have and help you figure out the best way to obtain the goals you are seeking to accomplish. A mentor can have amazing effects on your career and will make your advancements much easier.

Start Your Own Part-Time Business: I’m a firm believer that if you want to have the perfect job, you’re going to have to go out and create it yourself. While I have had many jobs over the years that I have truly enjoyed, it wasn’t until I started building my own sites and blogs that I realized what true passion for something was. Begin part-time and build slowly when you have free time, but start the process today. Five years from now you will be so thankful that you did and you might even find that it ends being your full time work.

Identify How You Procrastinate: We all do it, but if you can identify how you’re doing it and put in a system to discourage yourself from doing so, you will dramatically increase your productivity. My big vice was watching TV far too much and I’ve had to also ween myself from spending too much time on social networking sites as well. Once you have identified places that you are spending too much time, take steps to reduce the amount the time you spend on them and instead use that time to further your career.

Pinpoint Work Essentials: The big myth in business is that the ones who work the hardest are the ones that get ahead the most. Working hard is important, but working smart is just as important. Working smart means finding the areas within your job that are essential to your group and to the company and focusing most of your resources in those area. This is one of the best pieces of advice I ever received when working for a large company. Take some time to look at your job and what portions of it are most essential to others both inside and outside your group. If you pinpoint those areas that are most essential, you become the person that people come to when things need to get done.

Begin Making Lists: I used to think that making lists was useless until I started making them myself in a way that was useful for me. I actually have two lists – one is a list of all the things I want to do and one is my daily must do list. On the daily list, I only place the three most important things I have to do that day and work on those three things until they’re done. Once finished, then I can go to my general list and choose projects from there. This ensures that I get those things that I may not like to do as much that would be constantly delegated to the end of the longer list. How you develop your list to work for you may be very different, but creating a list system will help you be more productive. Once you complete something, don’t throw the list away. Instead, date and file them in a work completed folder. This will allow you to have a documented list of all the tasks you accomplished which you can take out at your next performance review or when asking for a raise.

Learn a Second Language: As someone who was the worst student ever when it came to languages in school, I’m living proof that absolutely anyone can learn a second language. I think all of my high school language teachers would roll over in their graves if they knew I was proficient in Japanese. Being proficient in a second language can open up a lot of career opportunities and is well worth pursuing if you have an interest in one. There are plenty of resources online including those developed by the Foreign Service Institute.

Take Some Classes: Too many people feel that education ends when you receive that college diploma. In fact, it’s a never ending pursuit even if you aren’t taking formal classes. There are almost certainly classes you can take or skills that you can obtain that will make it easier for you to advance in your career. Take a few moments to talk with your boss or a mentor to find out what skills will make your advancement easier. Talk with your personnel department and ask if they will help pay for you to obtain these skills. Many will. It’s easier than ever to take classes while working full time with online education.

Update Your Resume: Take some time to look over your resume to update it and improve it. It’s always a good idea to have an up-to-date resume handy on the off chance that another opportunity arises. Make new copies and place them in your briefcase so that they are always ready to hand out.

Get Linked: Web 2.0 has made it easy to make new contacts with people that have a similar background and career interests. If you haven’t signed up yet, consider joining Linkedin which can greatly expand your networking resources. If you have already joined, take some time to explore and find some other people you may want to contact.

Send Some Emails: I have learned over the years that one of the most important things you can do in any job you have is to stay in contact with people you meet. This can be an easy way to improve your career, keep network lines open and create new network contacts. There are probably more than a few professional contacts that you have made that you haven’t touched based with in awhile. There may be some people that you have never met, but that you would like to make contact with. Spend a few minutes sending out emails to some of these people to reestablish contact or create a new contact.

Make A Few Calls: For the exact same reason that you should send out some emails, you should also make a few phone calls to catch up with peers and others. Calling is a more direct approach that will make sure that your message doesn’t get lost in all the other emails the recipient receives.

Make A Lunch Date: One of the most effective tools I used when I was working for a large company was the lunch break. First because I really didn’t like eating alone, but later because of all the advantages that come from it. Lunch dates give you an opportunity to talk with people about ideas you have in a more informal setting than the office. Making a lunch date is also excellent way to network and catch up with peers and mentors, or to meet someone new you’ve wanted to talk to. If everyone seems to be too busy with their work schedule, this is an excellent time to set up a meeting.

Go To Career Events: Take some time to research what meetings, presentations, talks or events are taking place in your area which are related to your career and sign up to attend. Not only are you likely to gather some good information, these are excellent places to meet new contacts and expand your contact network.

Join and Participate In Associations: If your career has an association, don’t only join it, but make an effort to participate in it. Most local chapters are always looking for people willing to lend a helping hand and doing so can easily put you in the position to meet those higher up in the organization. Again, this will open you up to a wide variety of new contacts and expand your network of contacts. It will also help you keep up with the newest developments in your career which has many advantages.

Show Some Appreciation: It’s amazing what a sincere, hand written “thank you” note can do for the amount of time it takes to create. With email and the paperless office, thank you notes stand out these days and definitely leave an impression on the recipient. Furthermore, they know that the time they spend helping you was appreciated and therefore will likely be more than willing to help out in the future as well. If someone has recently helped you out in some way, take a moment to thank them for their help. This is one thing that it’s hard to do too much of, so if in doubt, always side with sending the note of appreciation.

Reread All Your Documents: It took me a long time to break my bad habit of not rereading my writing before showing it to others, but I learned after a number of embarrassing mistakes which I should have known better. With the ease of spell checking, I got into the habit of assuming my work was fine after it cleared the spell check. It’s a bad assumption to make since a lot of things can go wrong even when words are spelled correctly. Get into the habit of rereading everything that you write whether it be an email, a report or any other work related document, especially after a spell check. You will avoid a lot of embarrassing amateurish writing mistakes and look a lot more professional in all your work.

Improve Your Writing Skills: Along the same lines as rereading your documents, you want to constantly work on improving your writing skills. Being able to put together reports, letters, proposals and other written information in a way that easily draws attention the the important points among all the information is a great skill to have that will get noticed. Take some time to go over basic writing techniques when you have some free time.

Improve Your Business Cards: Spend some time thinking about the impression you want your business cards to make and see if there are some changes that you can make to them to achieve what you want. I’m looking for more professional looking business cards that are still creative and will leave a lasting impression on anyone who receives them. Take a bit of time doing this and it may lead to an opportunity that would have never appeared if your business card was lost in the pile with everyone else’s.

Improve Your First Impression: While one of the big reasons I got out of the corporate world was so I didn’t have to worry about dressing corporate for good for first impressions, there is no doubt that they count. Dressing appropriately and having good hygiene and manners is important. Learn to make eye contact when speaking to people, smile, know how to introduce yourself confidently and always be on time (if not a bit early). Take a few moments to make sure that you are making a good first impression with everyone you meet.

Improve Your Public Speaking Skills: One of the most terrifying things for me is to do public speaking. Over the years, I have gotten a lot better, but when I first started teaching, even going in front of a classroom of high school students would have my stomach churning the entire morning before classes began. Being able to make a quality presentation is an important way to get noticed and improve your career prospects. Listen to the way that your favorite speakers deliver their information and adopt them into your own speaking. Join your local Toastmasters group to help you improve these skills.

Read: Get in the habit of reading at least an hour a day on a wide variety of topics. Some of it should be related to your chosen career and issues that pertain to it so that you keep up on the latest news and trends, but it’s not necessary to focus your reading habits exclusively on this topic. Reading should help spark new ideas, challenge your thinking process and expand your knowledge base – all things that can be helpful in your career advancement.

Clean Your Office Space: If your work area is anything like mine, it needs to have a good cleaning once a week or it will quickly get out of control. I actually have this marked down on my calendar to do every Friday afternoon and it’s amazing what 15 minutes will do to keep your desk organized. It may, however, take a bit of time to get to the point where all you need is 15 minutes to clean everything up. Start today to put things in order and put aside 10 minutes a day until you have your work area in the condition you want. You will be surprised at how much time you save looking for things and an orderly office leaves a good impression on anyone who works in your group or visits.

Set Some Career Goals: This is another one of those things that seems obvious and I thought I could get away with general ones that I had in my head, but now realize the power that comes with taking the time to write them down and make them both clear and specific. Give them a time limit if possible. While you may not always reach them, making them and knowing specifically what you want to achieve will get you a lot closer to them than not doing so. Set them for various time periods: 3 months, 1 year , 5 years, etc. and then begin working toward them.

Create a Blog or Website: Create a blog or website about your chosen career can be a great way to meet new people and share ideas. It can also be a great way to begin that part-time business mentioned earlier and may even end up being your full time job. I have found that creating content has a way of helping to crystallize the things that are truly important to me which goes a long way to helping me know what goals are most important for me to achieve. Starting any type of blog or journal will help you do the same. Just be sure that doing so will not get you in trouble with your company.

Love Your Job: Learn to love what you’re doing or begin looking for something else. Life is far to short to do something that you don’t truly enjoy. There are times when you may have to take a job that you don’t particularly like, but there is no reason that you have to be stuck there. If you don’t thoroughly enjoy what you’re doing, start implementing steps to get a job that you do love. There is nothing better in the world to get up every morning and knowing that even if you weren’t getting pays a dollar to do so, you would still be doing the same thing that you are doing. It’s also much harder not to improve your career opportunities when you love what you do because the energy and enthusiasm you have for what you do tends to be infectious and draw people to you. And if for some reason you don’t know what you love, start experimenting. That’s the only way to find out.

A Guide to Sales Positions

By Philip Weston

Working in sales is a challenging yet rewarding job, but there are so many different types of sales jobs it is easy to get confused by each role. Below is a brief explanation to the most commonly advertised positions.
Sales representatives
A sales representative's role is to call customers each day, enquiring about their needs, promoting products, advising customers and taking orders. Depending on the company and the exact description of your job, you may have higher emphasis on serving existing customers offering them new products and building on the firms relationship with the consumer. However, some companies expect you to cold call and find new business which is often incentive based. Working as a sales representative is often seen as the starting point in a sales career.
Sales executive
If you take on the role of a sales executive, you are likely to have to make fewer calls per day to customers as more emphasis will be put on you finding new business and presenting demonstrations of products. Depending on the products on offer, you could find that each sale involves two or more visits to a potential customer.
Telesales
Working in telesales is similar in some ways as working as a sales representative. The role is usually office based and involves calling customers to offer products or services. It is mainly proactive in that you make the calls, but it may also involve the answering of incoming calls to answer sales enquiries. The role tends to be less technical but requires energy, enthusiasm and resilience.
Sales director
The sales director plays a pivotal role in a company and is typically responsible for the sales and marketing functions of a business. How hands on you are in the position is highly dependent on the size of the business and whilst it is likely as sales director you would be responsible for strategy, direction as well as sales and marketing initiatives, you may also be expected to play a key sales role.

Supervision: Know What It Is and What You Can Expect

By Anthony Tedla

Supervising employees in today's environment can be both stressful and aggravating followed by downright frustration. When an employee makes a mistake or commits an infraction which requires discipline, a supervisor feels like it may require a criminal court setting when attempting to administer this discipline. Another situation is if the employee is doing just enough to pass off as 8 hours and nothing mor, he/she expects a party and a 21 gun salute. Yet another problem exists when an employee excels(from their point of view), and the supervisor is not exhibiting enough accolades or handling out rewards to meet the employee's satisfaction. The employee may exhibit a type of "hero" complex where they deem themselves invincible or untouchable. Other areas of conflict include promoting through the ranks and having to supervise those who were once peers. The top employee conflict maybe the sexual/workplace harassment complaint. finally there is the insurgent who continuously looks for errors in the supervisor's decision making process. Now not all workplaces have all of these types of chaotic circumstances, but chances are one or two of these scenarios have happened at one time or another. Many of these situations tend to be more prevalent in occupations that are highly structured or have a uniform chain of command.

Depending on the severity of the infraction an employee makes and the discipline to be executed can make for an interesting outcome. Like many television crime shows, it can be riddled with plots and twists. Many times the employee can manifest the punishment into management's lack of proper training or insufficient resources to complete the task. They may also choose to become a "Whistleblower" in order to avoid punishment. If the infraction involves monetary loss then there is usually a union or workplace advocate group to fight for the employee with a multitude of counter options. This may include a background history on the supervisor/manager involved or the company's policy and procedure being challenged. This way the employee's mistake is deflected by the supervisor's personal life or professional skills. The employee's disciplinary record is another factor. One situation has to do with the employee's nonchalance to the issue. Since they may have made the mistake on previous occasions they know how far the supervisor can go with discipline or what the supervisor's threshold is on non-punitive action. In this case they tend not to care about any action taken and even brag to their peers. They now deem the supervisor useless and incapable of performing their job.

An old saying is supervisors spend 90% of their time on 10% of their employees. I have it broken down a little differently. A supervisor spends 70% of their time on difficult employees, 10% on the average employee and 20% on the "Overachievers". Overachievers is a metaphor for the employee who does just barely enough to get by. The "8 and skate" and collect paychecks can be a supervisor's worst nightmare. This type of employee feels that because they are going above and beyond by simply "treading water" and not causing problems, then they are special. I also call this type of employee a PPP(or Triple P) or Praised, Preferred and Promoted. They feel a need to be consistently praised for doing the expected work, any special duties or bonus should go to them because they are preferred and when it's time to promote they should be the one promoted. This employee will consistently find fault in supervision and management, when mistakes are made or the system falls apart. Then employees weren't adequately prepared or supported, it's someone else's fault or they have documented evidence or supervisor mismanagement.

These Triple P's are also the employee "Watchdogs" for the workplace. If someone makes a mistake that the P's have previous made, then it's their job to ensure that the supervisor takes the exact same action. Now there is nothing wrong with this type of action, but some employers have a system in which prior work history is taken into account. The Triple P's also have what some call a "blind perception". The Triple P's have their own perception of what happened and nothing else matters. They don't have all the facts and since it's none of their business, they are not privy to all the facts. They only see what they want to see; and the supervisor who is bound by employee privacy rights, cannot disclose all the facts. The P's may often enlist the help of the 10% to back their position in these types of issues. Since the 10% consistently have problems, their support helps solidify the Watchdog's position by showing multiple complaints on the issue. They already know which ones to pick based on certain employees tendency to follow the crowd.
A well known hypothesis is that people dislike change. The Watchdogs love this type of situation. When there is a system that they don't agree with, added work or responsibility with no compensation or when a group of employees are found at fault, the Watchdogs show up in full force. They rely primarily on the discontent of the 70% to support their opinions or attempt to block the issue at hand. This is also where they fall back on their Union or workplace advocacy. The individual supervisor or management also fall under the scrutiny of these groups. Personal Life and Professional History are the favorite places for them to look at and use for leverage. These types of situations also lead to lack of production, lost man hours and non-participants being affected. Supervisor also tend to grow gray hair if they are involved in the type of scenario.

The final section to discuss is what I call the "Emotion Factor". this occurs when an employee is promoted withing the workplace, is in a relationship with an employee or the supervisor or employee believes every issue is a workplace/sexual harassment issue. If a supervisor promotes within, this can cause problems if they cannot separate work from any personal attachment they might have with the employee. Even more difficult is if the employee cannot differentiate the supervisor from the friend or ex-coworker. In many places it is wise to promote outside the workplace. If a supervisor is having an intimate relationship with an employee, it can end in disaster for both sides. This is especially prevalent during times of promotion, pay raise or discipline. Favoritism or preferential treatment allegations may also surface. The "Policy Parrot", as I call them, is the employee who finds fault in almost every decision a supervisor makes or action taken. They threaten action based on their perception of certain decisions or policies and then claim harassment. This makes it especially difficult in the case of sexual harassment. Supervisor must keep abreast of all departmental policy and procedures on a daily basis. They must also ensure that the employees are consistently aware and provide training on a regular basis. Again, countless man hours are wasted by these "Policy Parrots" on unjustified claims. Because every claim must be investigated at some level, this type of employee attempts to make the matter a popular "water cooler" topic.

After listing many of the downsides of being a supervisor, one would concede that promotion or assignment is not worth the benefits that come with the position. Then again; with the economy the way it is, most will jump at the opportunity. Bearing that in mind the examples listed are just Supervisor's Nightmares. Many of these issues may not occur in some workplaces. It is just important that an individual be made aware of them and be prepared to handle the situation if it arises. An individual may want to consider that when being placed in a supervisory position, they may have to adopt a different type of personality(within the workplace) than they are accustomed to. This is not to say a person must change completely. They must also be ready to execute direction, policy and procedure from management that conflicts with the workforce. They may disagree with what they are expected to enforce, but it is critical to not voice these opinions to their subordinates. If this happens they lose trust from above and give a perception of weakness from subordinates when he/she is manipulated by them. The supervisor must constantly be vigilant for signs that any of these issues are starting to manifest. It is imperative that management ensure supervisors are properly trained on how to deal with these situations and that periodic training is in place to refresh all employees. This world in which everybody has to be "politically correct", supervisors (especially first level or mid level supervisors) can be the first on the unemployed line when situations arise. It's unfortunate that the 10/90 or 10/20/70 exists, but we can take comfort in the fact that "Big Brother" hasn't totally automated everything.
